Looking Up

I admit that my “Chaos!” post may have been a bit whiny, but honestly, whiny is how I was feeling for a few weeks there! But God has been so good to remind me that we are in El Salvador in His timing and for His purposes. Psalm 121 has been one that continually comes back to me. I read it about a year ago when I was in El Salvador for the first time. I was struggling with what God wanted from me exactly. It’s not a long Psalm, so here it is:

I look up to the mountains—
does my help come from there?
My help comes from the Lord,
      who made heaven and earth!

 He will not let you stumble;
the one who watches over you will not slumber.
Indeed, he who watches over Israel
      never slumbers or sleeps.

The Lord himself watches over you!
The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.
The sun will not harm you by day,
      nor the moon at night.

The Lord keeps you from all harm
      and watches over your life.
The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go,
      both now and forever.

Recently I opened my Bible to this Psalm and found the words that I had forgotten that I wrote a year ago. My note to myself said : “Even in El Salvador.” I definitely needed to hear that! I also recently heard someone talking about his own experiences in El Salvador and life in general and how much this passage has brought encouragement to him.

I know that my help comes from the Lord because He continually provides for our needs. This has been evidenced by the fact that we just recently have had new partners join us in our ministry as financial donors. It’s easy to stress about money when we have to raise funds for all of our expenses but this is an area where God has gently reminded me that “my help comes from the Lord.” Thank you to all of our financial partners who so faithfully give, and thank you to all of you who pray for our finances…we could not be here without you!

There is a lot of pain and loss in this country and the idea that we could even make a difference here sounds crazy…but that’s the beautiful thing…this is God’s show, not ours. He is the Helper of El Salvador. The city of San Salvador is surrounded by hills and the geology serves as a reminder to me as I often find myself “looking up”…a reminder that the only one capable of changing lives is the one who never slumbers or sleeps, the one who is constantly watching mankind seeking to heal, and seeking to save. And we are just so glad that we get to be along for the ride!

The San Salvador Volcano. It looks like it's erupting but it's actually just a cloud around the peak. The volcano is a crater and a peak. Our house is one of the man you can see on the slope of the volcano.
