This past Sunday, October 1 was Children’s Day in El Salvador. It’s a special day for kids to have a lot of fun eating treats, dressing up, and enjoying parties just for them!

There were 6 kids in El Salvador this year who didn’t make Children’s Day just about them. Those kids were the boys at New Dawn. These are boys who have spent the past months battling addiction. These are boys who have worked through trauma, who have done the hard work of reflection and change. These are boys who were on the streets not that long ago, boys who were on a collision course with disaster.

On Sunday, we saw something different. We saw boys baking cookies and making cards. We saw them dress as superheroes and head to the local children’s hospital with their treats in hand. They spent the afternoon bringing smiles to the faces of kids suffering through horrific illnesses and injuries. They laughed and played with them, and for those moments they were superheroes to those kids in need.

What an amazing moment for our staff to see. The truth is that these boys are superheroes because they are working through soul crushing stuff. They are in a crucial point in their lives. These months in New Dawn are make it or break it for them as the future hangs in the balance.

Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the opportunity we have to see transformation happening right before our eyes. Many of these boys have made a commitment to Jesus Christ, have asked him to mold and change their hearts. The way they see themselves and others is changing. They also have committed to working through the damage that addiction has brought them, and fighting forward toward hope and healing.

We are humbled and grateful to God for what we see happening, for new beginnings, for healing, and for change. Most of all, we are thankful for the privilege of having these superheroes in our lives.

Este pasado domingo 1o de octubre se celebró el Día del Niño en El Salvador. Es un día especial para divertirse, comer “chucherías”, vestirse lindos o disfrazarse y disfrutar fiestas hechas especialmente para ellos.

Hubo 6 chicos este año en El Salvador que no hicieron el Día del Niño solamente algo acerca de ellos. Esos chicos son nuestros chicos de Un Nuevo Amanecer quienes por los últimos meses han luchado contra sus adicciones, han atravesado situaciones de trauma y han hecho el duro trabajo de reflexionar y cambiar. Estos son chicos que estaban en las calles no hace mucho tiempo, chicos que iban rumbo a una coalición desastrosa.

Este domingo vimos algo diferente. Pudimos ver chicos horneando galletas y escribiendo tarjetas. Los vimos disfrazarse como super héroes y dirigirse a un hospital de niños local con presentes en sus manos. Pasaron la tarde haciendo sonreír a niños que están sufriendo por enfermedades y otros padecimientos terribles. Jugaron y tuvieron un buen momento con ellos, y por ese tiempo fueron super héroes a esos niños que padecen necesidad.

¡Fue un momento increíble de presenciar para nuestro personal que les acompañó! La verdad es que estos chicos son super héroes porque están trabajando y luchando con situaciones duras que pueden romper el alma y están en un momento crucial en sus vidas ahora. Estos meses en Un Nuevo Amanecer son como “lo logras” o “te rompes”, ya que su futuro está aún en riesgo.

Nuestros corazones están llenos de gratitud por la oportunidad que tenemos de ser testigos de la transformación ocurriendo delante de nuestros propios ojos. Varios de estos chicos han tomado su decisión por Jesucristo y le han pedido que moldee y cambie sus corazones. La manera en que ellos se ven a sí mismos y a otros está cambiando. Ellos también se han comprometido a esforzarse por superar el daño que las adicciones les han hecho y seguir adelante caminando hacia la esperanza y la sanidad.

Nos sentimos honrados y agradecidos con Dios por lo que vemos pasar, por nuevos comienzos, por la sanidad y por el cambio. Más que nada, ¡estamos agradecidos por el privilegio de tener super héroes en nuestras vidas!
