Soul-Tending – Cuidando el Alma

I remember in my childhood, my mother always had a garden. We always joked about her “green children” because of the time she spent bent over that garden. She would kneel down and gently tend the young plants, work to create an environment for growth, and do everything she could to protect those tender greens from outside predators who would seek to consume them.

Tending a soul is not so different. There is kneeling, and toiling. There is a gentle pushing away of dirt, and fierce war against outside forces that would move in to destroy. There are fledging greens that push up through the soil, and we celebrate them and work to make their environment all that it possibly can be so that those sprouts can one day be plants, can one day bear fruit.

Perhaps I see this so clearly when I tend the souls of children. On a recent afternoon, I spent several hours gently tending young souls who have seen abuse, and been exploited, and suffered horrendous and unspeakable evil. But there is still a tenderness there, there is still a pushing through the dirt, a reaching to the sun that cannot be denied.

On this afternoon, we simply colored simple pictures. Coloring, art, moving hands across paper heals the soul. It makes space sometimes for the receiving of simple truths. So as we colored, I spoke to them of God’s great love, and their great worth, and how much they are worthy of being beloved by God.

Eres amada y digna de ser amada…you are loved and worthy of being loved.

We colored it and we spoke it, and we remembered that we were beloved of God. In that moment I found how very much I needed to hear that too because tending souls makes me forget to tend my own. It’s too easy to lean into my own strength, to wander from the strength of my Father, and sometimes in moments just like this one He calls me back. He shows me His heart, for me, for them, for we are His beloved.

Because He makes us worthy, we are worthy and we are called to this work, and this on-our-knees toil, and this slow tending. Because He is in it there is a trust that He is growing something big and strong, and there is fruit to be found.

Fellow soul-tenders, be encouraged in your own garden today. Tend the souls that are growing in front of you and remember that we are loved by Him. Our work has worth and when we lean into Him, He grows something beautiful in us all.

Esa tarde, simplemente coloreamos cuadros sencillos.
