What does freedom mean to you?

Think about that…what does it mean to truly be free? For political prisoners, it means freedom of expression. If you owe a debt, freedom is having economic means. If you are locked in, opening the door is the way to freedom.

For so many in El Salvador, freedom means being able to flourish, to grow, to breathe and live without fear or stress or worry. Unfortunately, the situations that face our clients pose great barriers to that kind of freedom. Their lives are complicated as things like entrenched poverty, hopeless violence, and the lack of a supportive community hold them back.

What if they could truly find freedom? It may seem like mere wishful thinking, but it is a dream that we believe can become reality. We can’t change the world, but maybe we can facilitate steps toward freedom.

Simple freedoms like being respected, having dignifying work, and having the ability to make choices are freedoms that our clients have often been denied. Poverty is a hard thing to shake because it’s not just about economy. It’s also about community and a place to belong. Years of being on the edges really do make someone feel like that is where they belong.

For our clients who have survived horrible abuse and exploitation, they are left to feel like slaves in every way. A slave to fear and a lack of options. The freedom of new opportunity seems almost too good to believe.

Others have struggled with the weight of addiction strapped to their backs. Trauma, fear, pressure, pain…so many things tied that weight there. Is it even worth healing, fighting through, finding a new way? It seems like too hard of a fight.

But there is freedom to be found.

We believe it, and we hold to it. As El Salvador celebrates Independence Day this September 15th with waving white and blue flags, we also celebrate. We claim freedom as we dream with our clients of new life rhythms, new chances, and new hopes. Instead of sinking into darkness, we set goals.We don’t look down; we look forward with those who would set foot on the path to freedom. We make a commitment to grow together, to overcome, to find a new way

We do it for them, for us, for freedom.

¿Qué significa la libertad para ti?

Piensa en esto … ¿qué significa ser verdaderamente libre? Para los presos políticos, significa la libertad de expresión. Si tiene una deuda, la libertad consiste en tener medios económicos. Si estás encerrado, abrir la puerta sería el camino a la libertad.

Para muchos en El Salvador, libertad significa ser capaces de florecer, crecer, respirar y vivir sin miedo, estrés o preocupación. Desafortunadamente, las situaciones que enfrentan nuestros clientes representan grandes barreras para ese tipo de libertad. Sus vidas son complicadas ya que cosas como la pobreza arraigada, la violencia sin esperanza y la falta de una comunidad de apoyo los detienen.

¿Qué pasaría si realmente pudieran encontrar la libertad? Puede parecer meramente una ilusión, pero es un sueño que creemos puede convertirse en realidad. No podemos cambiar el mundo, pero tal vez podamos facilitar los pasos hacia la libertad.

Simples libertades como ser respetado, tener un trabajo digno y tener la capacidad de tomar decisiones son libertades que a nuestros clientes a menudo les han sido negadas. La pobreza es algo difícil de sacudir porque no se trata solo de la economía. También se trata acerca de la comunidad y un lugar para pertenecer. Años de estar conviviendo en los límites, realmente hacen que alguien sienta que es a donde pertenece.

Para nuestros clientes que han sobrevivido a horribles abusos y explotación, terminan sintiéndose como esclavos en todos los sentidos. Un esclavo del miedo y la falta de opciones. La libertad de las nuevas oportunidades parece demasiado buena para creer.

Otros han luchado con el peso de la adicción atado a sus espaldas. Trauma, miedo, presión, dolor … muchas cosas ataron ese peso allí. ¿Vale la pena sanar, luchar y encontrar una nueva manera? Parece una pelea demasiado dura.

Pero hay libertad que puede ser encontrada.

Lo creemos y lo mantenemos. Mientras El Salvador celebra el Día de la Independencia el día 15 de septiembre, con banderas blancas y azules, también lo celebramos. Reivindicamos la libertad mientras soñamos con nuestros nuevos ritmos de vida para nuestros clientes, nuevas oportunidades y nuevas esperanzas. En lugar de hundirnos en la oscuridad, establecemos objetivos. No miramos hacia abajo; esperamos con ansias a aquellos que pondrán un pie en el camino hacia la libertad. Nos comprometemos a crecer juntos, a superar, a encontrar una nueva forma.

Lo hacemos por ellos, por nosotros, por la libertad.
