Father’s Day in El Salvador – El Día del Padre en El Salvador

A special thanks to guest blogger, Alexia Rodriguez, one of our staff members, for sharing her thoughts…

“Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.” Psalm 27:10

There are obvious differences between the way that Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are celebrated, at least in El Salvador. Here Mother’s Day is celebrated on May 10, and this year is was a Wednesday.  Department stores and malls had discounts, sales, and gifts starting the Friday before so everyone could spoil their moms. On the actual day, these places were full of lines of last minute-shoppers, restaurants had no space left for those who didn’t make reservations, parking lots were full of cars, and flowers were being sold for marked-up prices on every street corner. And the traffic? Total chaos!

Father’s Day was celebrated early this month on Sunday, June 18. Even though it was a Sunday, there were no packed malls, long lines, huge sales, overflowing parking lots, or chaotic traffic. Sadly the father figure in El Salvador, and in Latin America in general, has lost importance over the years. Every day we see more men not taking their rolls as fathers seriously. We see more single moms trying to fullfill a roll that was really designed by God to be filled by two people : man and woman, mom and dad. Children grew up with this father figure in their lives and little by little become accustomed to thinking life without a father is a “normal”.

Specifically in El Salvador, the civil war between the army and the guerrilas left deep scars. The destruction went beyond the deaths of thousdands of innocent people…hundreds of families were broken by the loss of a father, a mother, or both. In El Salvador we cannot ignore the affects of the war, or the enormous impact of migration because of gang violence. “It is estimated that 300 people, the majority of them men, leave every day in search of the “American dream,” risking their lives crossing through unknown and unsafe places,” according to this article published in 2016.

Here we see how Psalm 27:10 makes sense. From generations back, we have inherited unhealthy patterns and we have completely distorted fatherhood as God established it in the beginning. At Mission To El Salvador, we have come to recognize that the vast majority of our clients have inherited these patterns and without even realizing it they have been caught up in the cycle of abuse, addiction, abandonment, irresponsible parenting, and violence. This is the reason that our greatest desire is that everyone who is involved at Mission To El Salvador would come to have a relationship and connection with God. We work to meet basic needs like food and clothing, with the desire that they would also recognize their Savior and that their daily lives would begin to change from the inside out. We desire to see them find satisfaction in their lives, and to see their deepest need met…belonging and becoming part of the family of God. Perhaps our clients have never been part of a healthy family before. Perhaps they have never experienced a family with a mom and a dad that showed them from birth how to give and receive unconditional love, security, protection, respect, and dignity. We believe that God himself holds them close, and has brought them here to be part of the Mission To El Salvador family.

Earlier this month, the Lighthouse Project celebrated all of our dads in a special way. We had a Father’s Day party with nearly 50 men in attendance. We were able to share a delicious meal prepared by our volunteers and share special gifts with all the dads. Our Lighthouse Project Director, David, spoke powerful words of life and encouragement into the lives of these men.

Often it can be overwhelming, and so very discouraging, to see so much need in the lives of our clients that we so deeply care for. But we can take comfort in the promise of our God who will not abandon them, and who will hold them close.
