Earthquake in Chile

If you’ve seen the news at all this morning, then you know that a monster 8.8 quake struck Chile early this morning…that is huge! It also triggered a tsumani which has caused warning for countries all over the Pacific including El Salvador. It looks like Hawaii is going to get hit this afternoon by some big waves and evacuations are under way.

With the Haiti quake so fresh in mind I am again reminded of how fragile life is and again my heart aches for those who have lost everything. I also feel a now familiar twinge of fear as I know that El Salvador is part of the Pacific Rim of Fire. We live in an extremely earthquake prone part of the world. The earthquake in Haiti came as somewhat of a surprise but the one in Chile didn’t. They have gotten big quakes in the past including the biggest ever recorded – a 9.5. I know that earthquakes in El Salvador are no big surprise either. So, as I view the pictures of the damage on the internet my imagination runs wild…What would I do if our house started crumbling? Would we be able to get the kids to safety in time? Do we have enough emergency supplies stored? Will our generator work? And on and on and on…! But it also serves as a reminder to me that I serve a God who is bigger than earthquakes! For those of you who get our e-update, you’ve already seen this verse as we included it in our last update, but I just wanted to post it again as evidence that God is in control and caring for our family.

“Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. His heart is secure, he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes.”                                                                                    Psalm 112:6-8
