Rest – Descanso

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

These words from Jesus are recorded in Matthew 11:28-30 and they invite us to walk leaning on Him, sharing our burdens, and letting Him do the heavy lifting in our lives.

Sometimes we think it’s so much easier to lift the heavy stuff on our own. But then we end up burned out, spent, frustrated, and lonely. The temptation to work it all out on our own is hard to shake because it’s easier to hold my family and my callings close, to keep things in arm’s reach, under my control. Giving up is a hard thing to do.

But these verses call us to a different way. They call us to constantly give things up, keep our hands open, hoist our burdens up high on a holy back. They invite us to drop it down, before it brings us down, because the truth is that we can’t hold it all up anyway.

And when the dust settles, when we stop trying to juggle, when we realize it’s up to God, and not all about our abilities…then we find rest. We meet Him in the quiet and we find that working for Him is not so heavy, and even in the toughest tasks we can work with a joy that comes from being rested, and whole, and at peace.

This year we have made rest a priority, for everyone on our staff, because without a pause to pray, a moment to surrender, a habit of giving back we find ourselves all too eager to pick up the heaviest burdens and try to scale the highest walls alone, afraid, and tired.

So we are building rest in to what we do in formal and informal ways. That simply means we remember who it is that we are working for, and who is the one that is doing the real work, the one changing hearts and lives. As part of that process, our whole staff took a rest together last week. We did some training, and we had some fun, but we also took quiet moments to reflect.

We received His invitation and we found His rest.
