As we find ourselves in the midst of the Advent season, we are so grateful for the peace that the Christmas season brings. Valerie Nikkel is our guest blogger this week as we focus on true peace. 

If you had an unlimited amount of money how would you spend it?

I’m sure all of us have pondered this question at some point in our lives. The song, “If I Had a Million Dollars” lists the many possibilities. If we are honest with ourselves, material things would top our lists. A car, a boat, a house (and then a bigger house), exotic vacations, and the list goes on!

Recently that question was asked to one of the woman in our Free The Girls micro-enterprise program. Her answer might surprise you…it surely surprised me!

Peace.

That was her answer. Out of the endless choices, she chose peace. I looked up the meaning and here is what I found. Peace means “freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility. The freedom from, or the cessation of war and violence.”

This woman, like the others in this program, are survivors of trafficking and exploitation. They have experienced deep poverty, and they have suffered through horrific violence. They have now been given a new opportunity…freedom from their past lives. They have the choice to be independent, to run their very own businesses. They have the freedom to heal from their past, and they have the freedom to thrive!

We share opportunities, but we also share the promise of peace. God’s incredible love for them, His amazing grace extended to all. We walk with them toward peace that lasts. Peace from the pain of their pasts, peace from the violence that surrounds, peace from the gangs in their communities, and peace from their struggles.

True peace that we can find within, and that only comes from Jesus. He gave His followers a promise in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give peace to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.”

What a promise! In the midst of the violence, and chaos of this world, we can have peace. This is a peace that material things will never bring, but what a gift Jesus has offered to us all.

Como nos encontramos en medio de la temporada Navideña, estamos muy agradecidos por la paz que trae la Navidad. Valerie Nikkel es nuestra blogger invitada esta semana que va a ayudar a centramos en la verdadera paz.

Si tuvieras una cantidad ilimitada de dinero, ¿cómo lo gastaría?

Estoy segura que todos nos hemos hecho esta pregunta en algún punto de nuestra vidas. La canción: “Si yo tuviera un millón de dólares” (“If I had a million dollars”, canción en Inglés) menciona una lista de posibilidades. Si somos honestos con nosotros mismos, las cosas materiales estarían en los primeros lugares de nuestra lista. Un carro, un barco, una casa (y luego una más grande), vacaciones exóticas y la lista continua…

Hace poco, se le hizo esta pregunta a una de las mujeres de nuestra micro-empresa Free the Girls. Su respuesta puede sorprenderle…¡A mí me sorprendió!

Paz.

Esa fue su respuesta. De todas las posibles respuestas, ella escogió la paz. Busqué el significado de esta palabra y ésto es lo que encontré. Paz significa: “libertad del alboroto; silencio y tranquilidad. La libertad de, o el cese de guerra y violencia”.

Esta mujer, como las demás, son sobrevivientes de la trata de personas y la explotación. Han experimentado extrema pobreza y han pasado por una violencia terrible. Ahora, se les ha dado la oportunidad…, la oportunidad de ser libres de su vida anterior. Tienen la opción de ser independientes y tener su propio negocio. ¡Tienen la oportunidad de sanar de su pasado y florecer!

Compartimos oportunidades, pero también compartimos la promesa de la paz. El increíble Amor de Dios por ellas, Su asombrosa gracias extendida a ellas. Caminamos con estas mujeres hacia una paz que perdure. Paz del dolor que su pasado les causó, paz de la violencia que les rodea, paz de las pandillas en sus comunidades, paz de sus propias luchas.

Verdadera paz que podemos encontrar dentro de nosotros y que sólo viene de Jesús. El dio una promesa a sus seguidores en Juan 14:27: “La paz les dejo; mi paz les doy. Yo no se la doy a ustedes como la da el mundo. No se angustien ni se acobarden”.

¡Qué promesa! En medio de la violencia y el caos de este mundo, podemos tener paz. Esta es una paz que las cosas materiales no podrían darnos, ¡pero qué regalo el que Jesús nos ha dado a todos!
