Meditations on the Advent Season…Joy / Reflexiones sobre la Época Navideña..El Gozo

Joy to the world…

Tidings of great joy…

The word joy seems to be wrapped up in every part of the Christmas season. It’s on gift bags, and Christmas cards. It’s even scrawled across ads of large screen TVs and new clothing. We know that on that first Christmas the angels proclaimed it and the shepherds sought it.

But on that silent night, what kind of world received our humble King as he lay in infant sleep? A hurting world, a dark world, a world waiting for…something.

The real joy of Christmas was not to be realized for years to come. The real joy was just a promise on that first Christmas. A promise that we can hold on to during our own dark nights. A promise that lets us smile through the pain…a promise of joy that overcomes.

As I come to this week of joy, one face shines in my mind. The face of Douglas. The face of one who holds to a promise in the darkest nights.

Douglas spent years on the streets, addiction drove him there. Two years ago, he came to a live or die moment, and he called out for help. That was his first step toward joy. Fast forward to last month when he celebrated two years of sobriety. Two years of fighting and striving…two years of prayer and leaning on those around him.

The joy in his victory is celebrated by all of us who know him. He came to us as a client in the Lighthouse Project, he grew there and he served. Today he serves in a greater capacity as a full-time staff member. He is in charge of maintenance and he always has a smile and a joke for everyone. Joy is on his face, joy is the promise that sustains him through the dark and silent nights.

Joy is his because he has felt the hand of God, and his joy has guided me to the great promises of joy in my own life, and the celebrations of all that God has done.

The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.   Psalm 126:3

(Salmos 126:3)
